“God made the automobile to pass all the pretty girls
The smoke by the side of the road, the blues loving boys in tow
To drive to the end of the day and bow to a borrowed flag
To ride all the brave and the blind, and men without men in mind”
Before deciding to be a full-time rock star, Sam Beam was a film professor at University of Miami. He may or may not have taught The Rock while he was a student there. Tune in to WNRN this Friday at 11AM to hear the full interview before we post it here. All questions will be answered.

“Me and Lazarus kept bailing on that riverboat
Floating by the choir rose
Bobbing in the ebb and flow
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Guess I had nowhere else to go
He’s an emancipated punk and he can dance
But he’s got a hole in the pocket of his pants
Must be a symptom of outstanding circumstances”
To support Iron & Wine’s great new album, Kiss Each Other Clean, Sam Beam took a full band on the road with him and The Low Anthem as his support. David Lowery caught up with both bands at the 40 Watt Club. We will be hearing interviews with them both, plus an interview with Neko Case conducted by guest host Patterson Hood very soon. Right now, this is Me and Lazarus. Video by Jason Thrasher. Recorded and mixed by Drew Vandenberg of Chase Park Transduction. RadioVA is made possible by Insubordinate Media and Songsinc.

“Pick up the phone
i wanna talk
about my day
it really sucked
The sun was out
i felt i was flyin’
but then you slipped into my mind”

Back in January, David sat down with Nathan Williams to talk about his tour and recording with Dennis Herring. Sorry for the lack of updates recently, we have been sidetracked by a few projects. The other major project on our plate has been Campout East, a two day festival in Crozet, Virginia. We will have sessions with many of the festival’s artists!

“Well the green room girls don’t got a whole lot to say
Because you look like hell and you smell like yesterday
You’re surrounded by rock and roll martyrs
stuck up there on the wall
Lined up like the righteous
and waiting for the next big call
Don’t it seem like the stickers stuck around
a little longer than the bands who put em there?
You’re betting you’ll be the next in line,
but you can’t find the strength to care
‘Cuz you’re missing all the things in life
that you never thought you would
So take a shower, and call your mom
You ain’t livin like you should.
So you stumble to the motel
and you can’t find the keys to your room
And I guess it don’t matter
cuz dawn will be coming soon
You just hang your head and you sigh
as you think of six days on the road
It will take more than double yellows
to get your ass back home
You’ve been wearing out your welcome
much like a February snow
So impure and so un-driven
and with no place else to go.
It’s getting harder and harder to tell
if you’re lost or just no good
So take a shower, and call your mom
You ain’t livin like you should.”
Life in Shambles first appeared on Sons of Bill’s 2010 EP appropriately titled Take a Shower. Call Your Mom. Your Life is in Shambles. A new version is going to have a home on their third album, which is set to be released this year. The band launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier today to fund the release. Check out the video by Rich Tarbell below and look at what their offering to their backers. You could get yourself a living room concert and a lecture about Faulkner!

“I can’t do anything with out you
Can’t do anything with you
You drive me crazy, but I love you
You make me lazy, but I love you
I want to hit you, but then I kiss you
Want to kill you, but then I’d miss you
You drive me crazy, but I love you
You make me lazy, but I love you “
David Lowery released his first solo album The Palace Guards on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. On January 28th, instead of lining up promotional appearances and stressing over the album release, David was preparing for interviews, coordinating with Drew our engineer and Jason Thrasher, our videographer. In this video, Best Coast plays the title track to their album Crazy for You. Recorded and mixed by Drew Vandenberg of Chase Park Transduction. Thanks to Songsinc for the support!

We were worried that we might not be too familiar with a lot of what was going on in these interviews, especially if you aren’t very familiar with Camper Van Beethoven, Wavves and Best Coast. This video should make you more positive about the interviews.

Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast has quickly become a star in the indie scene. She has gained a dedicated fan base not only through her music and extensive touring, but also her very candid use of Twitter, both as herself and as her pet, Snacks the Cat. Before heading to the 40 Watt Club, David decided that a homesick Cosentino might feel more comfortable and positive about RadioVA and getting interviewed if we made a mask out of a photo of Snacks. You can judge whether or not he was right. The video here was done by Jason Thrasher. Thanks to Songsinc for making this all possible. Please subscribe to RadioVA. There is much more to come!
